"Back in 2014 I sat down with Gavin for the first time over coffee on the Durban beachfront.
He wanted to discuss an idea he had for being able to help more people and expand his years of coaching and knowledge to a larger audience, through video lessons (yeah, you guessed it, GavSays.com), and wanted to hire me to help him build a Facebook page.
At the time I was just a -1 goaler... yeah, negative 1...
Living and working on my web business from a flat on the beachfront, and playing polo casually out of Shongweni Polo Club (having been umpiring professionally since 2010).
I just wanted to be able to play as much polo as I could, and catch up on all the polo I had missed out on in my youth.
Little did I know that that meeting was the start of a partnership that would help me grow and improve my polo in a massive way -- and enable me to start playing professionally, start coaching, and to train horses professionally.
In 4 years I went from -1 to 2 goals.
And I know what you're thinking... "Well, you had one-on-one coaching from Gav for 4 years, of course you went up in handicap." And you are partially right:
The reason why I was able to improve my polo SO much was ABSOLUTELY BECAUSE of Gav... But not because I had one-on-one lessons with him.
In fact , I have never once had a one-on-one lesson from Gav (a fact to which I am still very grumpy about :-) In all that time I have never had a lesson with me on the back of a wooden horse, or the back of a real horse, and had Gav analyze and instruct me on my swing, or give me riding lessons, or give me strategical coaching.
As much as I would absolutely love to have that (And it's not his fault, it's just the circumstance that on the brief times we're in the same location as one another, it's then all work work work on GavSays).
Anyway... EVERYTHING I have learned from Gav, has been because of the "inside" access I have had to the videos he has been creating. (And yes, of course, from the informal chats and discussion we have had over those videos).
But all that growth came from watching those videos, and then going and applying them on the back of a horse... Going back to the videos, watching again, self-analyzing, and then practicing and applying them on the back of a horse again.
And that goes for everything. Training horses. Riding. Ball hitting. And strategy.
And that's how I got to 2 goals.
PLUS how I was able to learn how to train and sell playing ponies. And why I get employed to train other people's horses now, play for them, coach and give lessons.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not telling you this story to brag about how good I am... Trust me, I still have a long LOOONG way to go, and a helluva lot still to learn on all those subjects. But I wouldn't be were I was if it wasn't for Gav, and his video lessons."
